Around 45 million foreign tourists are expected to visit Spain in 2021, the country’s tourism minister said on Wednesday. “It’s a cautious forecast but it’s realistic, that we can recover half of the international tourists that we had in 2019,” the minister said.

According to official figures, Spain is the world’s second most popular destination after France and registered 3.5 million foreign visitors in 2019.

Addressing reporters, Reyes Maroto hinted at the European vaccination passport as she stated that the government is “developing tools that will allow for safe travel”.

Next week, the European Union is expected to update its restrictions on non-essential visits from outside the EU. Spain was not included in the UK’s green list which was announced on Friday. The UK is Spain’s biggest source of tourists.

“If the UK looks at the regional lens, they will discover that there are many safe places in Spain to travel to,” Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya noted during an interview with the BBC.

She said that the two countries were in talks to place certain regions of Spain such as the Canary Islands and Valencia on its “green list” since infection rates are very low there.
