Spain welcomed close to nine million passengers from international airports last month, 87% of those recorded from August 2019, according to data published by Turespaña from Aena records.
Spain’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto said these figures are “very positive because they confirm the intense recovery of the tourism sector that is resisting well the uncertainty generated by the war and inflation. Our forecasts for the autumn are good, although within the prudence that is necessary to have in such complex times,” she stated.
There was a rise in visitors from all major countries to Spain in August, Schenghen Visa reports. One in four arrived from the UK, mainly travelling to the Balearic Islands, and 78.6% of passengers from Britain flew on a low-cost airline. In total, over the month, airports throughout the country received 2,240,299 passengers from the UK, a recovery of 84.6% compared to 2019’s figures.
In addition, a total of 1,338,855 passengers arrived in Spain from Germany, making up 14.9% of the total, again predominantly travelling to the Balearic Islands. A total of 51.8% travelled on traditional airlines and 48.2% on low-cost airlines. This market accounted for 87% of arrivals before the Covid crisis.
Furthermore, 831,581 passengers visited Spain from Italy in August, with the majority flying to Catalonia. In this case, 80% travelled on low-cost airlines, the Schenghen Visa report goes on to say. Additionally, 711,189 passengers visited the country from France last month.
